September’s “First Sunday” collection will benefit Anawim Housing.

In 1987, Sr. Stella Neill, RSM, created Anawim Housing, a nonprofit focused on providing permanent rental homes for low-income families. Since then, Anawim has become a leader in affordable housing, from the renovation of a single duplex in 1989 to the development and management of 221 units by 2010.  Anawim operates under the Housing First Model, guided by the belief that people need basic necessities like food and a safe place to live before attending to other critical needs. Through evidence-based programs and services, the Anawim staff addresses needs related to serious mental illness, substance abuse, physical disability, HIV, domestic abuse, and unemployment.

Today, Anawim is the largest provider of Permanent Supportive Housing in Iowa (which serves individuals with disabilities), serving 240 households and almost 400 individuals. Unfortunately, HUD grant funding has not kept pace with the rental market or utility increases. Donations will help fund a $111,092 shortfall of rent and utilities for one of the Permanent Supportive Housing programs.
