Our June “First Sunday” recipient will be Des Moines Refugee Support.
Des Moines Refugee Support (DMRS) assists refugees, in particular young students with their many needs, including clothing, supplies, transportation, and meals. DMRS also seeks to provide families with necessities for households, transportation for work and medical appointments, and any of the thousands of things we take for granted.
Funds from DMIEC’s First Sunday Collection will be used this summer to help 100 kids go to a week of overnight camp, 60 kids to take a week of swimming lessons, 16 kids to do a week of robotics camp, and 23 kids to play in a soccer tournament in Minneapolis. Kids will get trips to the Science Center, the Art Center, the zoo, and Adventureland. DMRS believes all kids should have the opportunity to do these fun childhood activities, which means paying for the activities, plus transporting and supervising.
DMRS uses Facebook to communicate with hundreds of volunteers about opportunities to serve as well as information about resources in the community that volunteers can access for the refugees. For more information on this organization, visit https://www.facebook.com/DSMRefugeeSupport .
CHECKS SHOULD BE MAILED TO:
DMIEC, P.O. Box 30065, Des Moines, IA 50310
Checks can be written either to “Des Moines Refugee Support” or to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.
We would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC. If you mail your check directly to the organization, please inform Ed Arnold of the amount, if you feel comfortable, so the Social Justice Committee can get an accurate count of donations.
